Barn Reinvented
Saratoga Springs, NY

Located in Saratoga Springs, NY, this barn inspired home integrates a modern open floor plan with the local vernacular reflecting clues from nearby stable buildings. This project began with the owners’ vested interest for a new sustainably designed home which reserved the laid-back nature of their existing cottage-style home, accommodated the expansion necessary for their growing family, while accommodating space for their home music and fitness instruction business. In response, Phinney Design Group developed a layout of flexible open spaces for the music and fitness lessons which are utilized by the family in everyday life, in a vernacular that used additive design to keep the scale proportionate with the neighborhood.

Furthermore, this home is a focus of sustainability and green building strategies. Incorporating various green and sustainable features such as a photovoltaic array, solar hot water, rain water harvesting, drought tolerant landscaping, community resources, and use of environmentally preferable products, this home is certified LEED Platinum by the United States Green Building Council (USGBC) and “Emerald” rated by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB).
