Private Camp – Saranac Lake, NY

Phinney Design Group was approached by clients from Texas wanting to build a camp-style retreat in the mountainess landscape outside of Saranac Lake, New York. Interestingly, they were looking for a modern interpretation of the classic Adirondack Camp. Not a great camp but a minimalistic structure that used the natural materials glass, wood, and stone of the Adirondack Style in a modern way and harmoniously integrated into the landscape. Large boulders gathered from the site serve as the anchors for the foundation of the home and the fireplace within, and floor to ceiling glazing distinguishes the eastern façade lending to passive solar heating and cooling. Curvilinear roof lines mimic the rolling landscape for a home that is truly in tune with its surroundings. For the interior, timber frame construction, wood and stone materials throughout, and natural environmentally-friendly finishes are strategically used so as not to interfere with the beautiful views to the exterior. The home makes a significant statement in the area in regard to the appreciation and connection to the land it is situated on; while maintaining the comfort one would seek in a relaxing vacation home.
